Cairns have been used since ancient times in Eurasia. In Scotland it was traditional to pick up a stone from the bottom of a hill and place it on top of the cairn when you get to the top. These cairns were constantly changing and growing larger. Folklore and legends throughout Britain and Ireland also mention burial cairns. In Iceland and Scandinavia they were commonly used as markers along the sea or on trails. In modern times cairns are beginning to pop up all over. There is a lot of controversy surrounding this practice. Some are upset about the environmental impact of removing stones and placing them in piles stating it loosens the dirt and contributes to erosion. Cairns found in waterways can also cause environmental damage as they are pummeled downstream during high rains. I for one find them very interesting. I always wonder who built them, what was their reason?, did they want to mark a trail or built it in memorial of somebody?
I've always loved to take photos ever since my parents let me play with their camera as a little girl. I love to seek out different angles of objects, architecture, landscapes, and people to create a unique and beautiful image. Behind the camera lens you take the time to stop and appreciate the bigger picture in life as well as the small details. I enjoy sharing my viewpoint through my lens with the world and hope it encourages everyone to stop and enjoy all that surrounds them. Even the everyday things!
